The Walt Potter Digital Ambassador Program looks to bring college students with digital media skills into community newsrooms in Vermont for a week-long internship in January. This year, that week will be January 11-15, 2027.
The goal is to give students a chance to apply the digital journalism skills they are learning in the classroom and to meet and work alongside editors and publishers of community news outlets. For newsrooms, students bring fresh ideas for content and energy to build tools and guides that will continue to be useful.
The program began in 2026 at the UVM Center for Community News. The Vermont Journalism Coalition is the coordinator this year and has expanded participation to other Vermont colleges and universities.
Students interesting in applying should fill out the form linked here and below. A stipend of $300 is available for up to 15 students to cover travel expenses such as gas and meals. Student slots will also be limited by the number and location of newsrooms participating.
The Walt Potter Digital Ambassador Program is funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri. Programs are active in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin.
