The Bridge: Reporter/Assistant Editor

This is a part-time position, up to 25 hours per week. We’re seeking a curious,
community-focused journalist to join our small, collaborative newsroom. This role blends reporting and editing — covering local news while helping ensure our stories are clear, accurate, and engaging.

The person in this role works closely with The Bridge’s editor-in-chief and is a
key member of the editorial team.

The Bridge is an independent nonprofit newsroom covering the towns of central Vermont, with a special focus on Montpelier. Our mission is to strengthen the bonds among the people of the towns and cities of central Vermont by covering issues and events that are important and meaningful to them, and by providing a platform for communication.

What you’ll do:

● Report on local government, schools, business, and community life
● Cover meetings and events, including occasional evenings/weekends
● Write clear, timely stories and occasional features
● Edit and proofread content for accuracy and style
● Help prepare and publish stories on our website
● Support newsroom workflow and audience engagement

What we’re looking for:

● Interest in community-centered, local journalism
● 2 or more years of journalism experience
● Strong writing, editing, and reporting skills
● Familiarity with AP style and journalistic ethics
● Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
● Experience with WordPress or similar website platform
● Optional: experience with social media posting and management

Details:

● Generally 25 hours/week (part-time, hourly/non-exempt)
● $27/hour + prorated paid time off
● Hybrid role based in Montpelier; at least one day per week performed at our
downtown Montpelier office.
